The most I've ever supported via external monitor is 1280x1024 (which works fine). I would guess that you need to get the drivers directly from Nvidia. I've found the default drivers Windows provides work fine until you need to do something a bit involved such as Photoshop CS4. My laptop supports 1024×768 via the flat panel monitor.
