Phil explains how to use the old telephone tones to wane off telemarketers!

I guess first, I should thank all of my blog readers for coming to my site, since now I’m on track for 500 visitors a month!  I thought I’d post the to date statistics screen since I’m really proud of what my new site design has done :D

Statistics of FamousPhil.com on 4/13/09

Now onto the main topic of this post, last night I was with a few friends at about 11pm and we got searching through all the domains in the world looking for what domains are taken and what not.  Anyways, many of my friends and I always can Windows Vista with the term: shitsta, since I would never consider running Windows Vista on any of my computers, it is far too unstable and slow for my needs.  Granted, I am a power user, but I cannot use Vista for a few hours without it getting super slow from all the memory and processor demands I put on it with programs that I write and test thoroughly.   Anyways, we found that shitsta.com is available, so I grabbed it.

It did take me a few minutes to think if I really wanted such a domain, but I thought it would be a nice humor site to have since I do like having a side of humor.  I don’t dislike Microsoft or anything like that, but Vista is a failure and Microsoft knows that but they keep pushing it. For example, Microsoft recently discontinued support for Windows XP to force the market to move to Vista, which isn’t really meant for anything more than causal use if you ask me.  Right now, I am still in the air on what I want to do, but I might add a few cool features to check for Internet Explorer and perhaps find some sort of known hole in IE (since 99% of home users don’t install Windows Updates), and use it to inform users of what can really happen to you when you don’t update.  Its only an idea, but I am confident that something cool will come of such a great domain!

I don’t hate Vista, but I hate how slow it runs.  I hope that Windows 7 comes out and is much better than Vista is right now.  If it isn’t, I may stop at Windows XP and move to Ubuntu as an upgrade!  I consider the extra 5 minutes of work for Ubuntu worth not suffering from performance issues that newer versions of Windows seem to suffer from.

We will see what comes out of shitsta.com, however I think its a great domain to have a little informative fun, don’t you? :)   Just for your curiousity, I will not have phil@shitsta.com as an email address, that just doesn’t look right :P   But I might offer an email service using the domain if there is some demand for it *laughs*.

Happy Easter to all of you reading my blog today, or Happy late Easter to all of you who read it in the near future :P

Unfortunately, today won’t be all that happy since I am doing the normal Sunday chores like laundry and cleaning up after myself with stuff that I’m too lazy to care about during the week.  My weekends are generally less hectic than my weeks, but with all the work I end up doing during a single week, I do let stuff go.

Anyways, Today I will be finishing up a Java Chatroom and Erlang Chatroom for my CSE305 programming class that is due tomorrow.  I intend on releasing this script on Friday to dev.matthouse.us along with a few older projects that I have completed like a Trie in Prolog (Yes, you can make a trie in a logical language).  I also will be doing a lot of French homework which will prepare me for my final exam in a few weeks.

It is amazing how the semester is coming to a close.  I only have a few more weeks of classes then its the summer and I will begin working on websites, in particular: eberlecontracting.com and retreadproducts.com.  If all goes well, I hope to have those both redesigned and finalized by June 1, 2009.

So there you have it :)   I hope your Easter is a bit more relaxing than mine is going to be, if not, I feel your pain!

Happy Happy!

I have been asked this question many times and I’m sure I’ve responded online before, but never in a formal blog, so here it is :P

Back in high school at Ellicottville Central, I got matthouse.us because I wanted a domain and wanted to start a personal network, thus the matt – house.  My shortened last name is Matt and it is in my house.  Matthouse was never intended to serve personal content, it was mainly for networking and experimentation with a possiblity of future expansion (such as its current use: hosting).

As a result, I wanted a personal site.  I am not a creative person, in fact, I’m quite boring and I will never approach you and offer help, I always will wait for you to approach me and ask for my help.  I’m far too busy normally to want to offer help, yet I am more than willing to help when asked ;)   So back to my site, I was at a loss and asked my creative writing classmates for help.  We spent an entire day as a class of 15 people coming up with a site and concluded with a decision on “phamousphil.com”.

I got the domain that night and started putting stuff on it, but the ph was always confusing to people so I also grabbed the famousphil.com version.  A year later, I ended up sticking with famousphil.com and got rid of phamousphil.com because having 2 sites with the same content would hurt me on google’s ratings.

In the past few months, I have heavily fixed famousphil.com, patching most of the major php bugs and holes in my site that could potentially wipe it from an easy virus.  About 4 months ago, my site had a sql injection to where on any url, you could type “http://famousphil.com/index.php?mode=delete * from *” and it would wipe my site and archives.  Thankfully for 2 years, no one ever did that trick.  I’m sure there were many other bugs also.  I never fixed it sooner because I keep daily backups and it wasn’t a priority until I got the time to properly redesign my site.

So, I’ve put out a little about about the origins of FamousPhil.com and a tiny bug that existed until 3 months ago.  If you are a hacker, don’t you wish you knew that a while back *I am laughing now*.  Things change for the better… “fo sho” -Justin Hyland (amphosted.com).
